And then there was...

This design element is taken from sidewalk tiles and has been recreated onto everything (t-shirts, mugs, stickers, magnets). They are extremely popular and everyone wants them for their house, now. Anyhoo, we make these tiles, too.

This is a tiny little piece of raku I made a few weeks ago. I'm hoping my photographic skills improve with time. :/

This is my work table with all the essentials. Bottled water, cell phone and a little raku pot of mine for inspiration.

This is a view, midway, of the studio to give an idea of the kind of space I'm in. There's gonna be a lot of cleanup going on.

These are sample address tiles. Yup, this is one of the things I'll be making.

*****************

(The text was supposed to be first, guys. I'm still working out the kinks.)

This is the very beginning for me so I want to thank anyone willing to even glance at my musings. There's some fantastic blogs that I read from potters all over the world. Y'all have really been inspiring. I'm just going to splash this thing with pictures of my very humble beginnings (which are all experiments at this point) of me trying to find my niche in this field along with tidbits from New Orleans and my vida loca.

I've just begun potting (almost three months). I fell in love with it immediately. Since I'm as old as I am, and as cheeky as I am, I just said, "What the hell! If they can do it, so can I.". All of you fellow pottery bloggers out there, I look up to you guys. I'd be honored if you even read this. I'm sure you'll see a little bit of yourselves around here somewhere.

So, here's the deal... I just began a new job (apprenticeship) working for a lady (Lisa) who's mom was a Newcomb College potter that was doing her thang since the sixties but passed away about three years ago. She (Lisa) hasn't had time to go anywhere near clay since then. Enter moi. I'm calling around trying to find someone who I can work and learn from cuz I can't really afford a $300,000.00 degree from Tulane University, ya know... We meet, fall in love (metaphorically, that is) and now I'm about to revive her studio (which means clean it up) and start producing address tiles. I'll be making clay, making glazes and learning as much as I can about balancing the business side and artistic side of the pottery world.

Please comment freely...

I'm applying for the opening of being your sub-apprentice. I'm a good garbage can holder.

  3. Thanks Cheryl. You're an inspiration.

I feel really lucky to have a studio to experiment in to find my niche AND to also have access to the experiences of so many fabulous and generous bloggers to learn from.

  6. Hi, thanks for commenting on my blog, will keep popping in to see how you are getting on. Just read Paul's comment about trying to find an apprenticeship. I wrote to 96 potters in the UK and go nowhere but then just stumbled across the place that I ended up at completly by accident.
    Good luck with it.

  7. Hi Wild Magnolia--I am not an artist or a potter, but I happened on your comment on Obama's election on another potter's site. Your beautiful blog name, your city, and your brief story intrigued ne. How exciting that you have gone to be a "real" potter in just three months. I found this inspiring. I wish you the very best with your potting and blogging.
